The Alan Ibell Band - If Bird or Devil

Alan Ibell is a painter and musician based in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Alan was born in Christchurch 1983 and moved to Dunedin to pursue his studies in art. He has completed four years at the Otago Polytechnic towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. His paintings often use the familiar to express the impossible. Distortions of the real, and the repetition of imagery combine to create recognizable yet mysterious spaces. His painted characters in uncanny situations allude to the logic of dreams and help to create surreal narratives. By creating an ambiguity usually found in dreams the physical space within each work is transformed into an imaginary or psychological space.

Alan started performing as a solo musician in 2005 and formed The Alan Ibell Band in early 2006. The alternative folk band recorded their debut album If Bird Or Devil over several months in 2008 and released it early in 2009. Alan's songwriting is in a similar vein to his painting style. The song's narratives create dream like images of characters and their stories.

His website contains painting galleries, information on upcoming events, music samples, news and information on The Alan Ibell Band and links to contact Alan.
